Directgov said that car drivers can use the app to find real time information on traffic congestion, accidents and roadworks nationwide.

For travellers on public transport, the travel news app provides information on delays and incidents across the UK.

Directgov is also developing a version of the software for mobile phones which run on Google's Android operating system.

Jayne Nickalls, chief executive of Directgov, said: "This is a first for Directgov and we are exploring and developing more innovative tools to help people access essential information easily and quickly."

Directgov pointed out that, for people who do not have an iPhone, travel news is already available on any internet enabled mobile phone across all networks by texting TRAVEL to 83377.
