GC magazine cover for September 2009

Kable publishes GC (Government Computing magazine), which focuses on the technology and policy issues around information management in the public sector. Every month it includes a range of features looking at how information technology is applied in the public sector, best practice, investigations of the policy issues, news analysis, interviews, opinion and conference reports. Launched in 1986, it is the longest established title in its field, and has an ABC audited circulation of over 15,000 from all parts of the public sector (see PDF of ABC certificate).

2010 features list

In the course of the year we cover a range of issues related to applications, back office operations, customer contact, data management, efficiency, funding, geographical information, green IT, hardware, identification, information security, mobile and remote working, networks, online services, open source, procurement, resilience and shared services.

The features list provides an indication of some of the subjects we plan to cover in GC in the approaching months. We do not provide any further detail. Anyone with information they believe may be relevant can send it to us at gc@kable.co.uk and if it stirs our interest we will get back in touch. Material usually has to be with us at the beginning of the month prior to the cover date to have a chance of serious consideration.

April
Measuring IT energy usage
What is the best way to do an energy audit and establish baseline ICT energy use, an essential starting point for planning to reduce carbon emissions? How can companies that are active in the field support their efforts?

Software and shared services
With continued pressure on public sector bodies to take up shared services, one of the main questions surrounds software standardisation. When is it needed, and what degree of standardisation is required? For what type of service? And how can the industry help the public sector rise to the challenge?

May
Thin client
The green agenda has provided a boost to interest in thin client technology. We look at the advantages, the obstacles to adoption, and the experiences of some public sector bodies that have taken the plunge.

Home working
Advances in broadband availability are making home working a serious option for more organisations, but they have to consider issues around security, accessiblity of data, the reliability of connections, the attitudes of staff and how it fits their management culture.

June
Green data centres
Public sector bodies using data centres to house their servers - either directly in a virtualised model or indirectly via service providers - need to be aware they are massive users of power. If they want to maintain their commitments to carbon reduction they need to choose their data centres carefully, check on whether they are meeting standards, and get up to speed on what makes a data centre green.

Shared services and IT leaders
As the take-up of shared services makes slow but steady progress in government, we look at how some organisations have followed the path, and examine the potential for senior staff leading the efforts across organisations.
