Liverpool trials mobile phone parking payments

Liverpool City Council is piloting a scheme to allow motorists to pay for parking with their mobile phones

The council said that the scheme, launched in mid January, is being tested in 11 locations across the city centre and is aimed at making it easier for people to pay for parking.

To use the service, drivers must call a Liverpool number and quote the parking reference number on the 'pay and display' machines and signs in car parks, then give their length of stay.

They will also be able to use their phones to extend the length of their stay without having to return to the vehicle.

Council parking attendants will receive parking details on handheld terminals, enabling them to check that parking payments have been made.

Councillor Peter Millea, executive member for assets and development, said: "We want to make it as convenient as possible for people to pay for parking and give them as wide a choice as we can.

"There will still be the option of putting coins in the pay and display machines, but increasingly people are using their mobiles for all different reasons.

"It means they do not need to have the right change for the parking machine and they will get alerts to let them know when their time is running out. They can even extend the time they want to park without having to rush back to put more money into the machine."

The city council has contracted BemroseBooth Mobile for the initiative, which will run initially for six months.

LB Westminster, the UK's largest parking authority, offers pay by phone, having removed coin meters for specific parking bays.
