OS and Land Registry to share data centre

Ordnance Survey will use part of the Land Registry's data centre in Gloucester under a five year agreement

OS will lease 219 square metres of serviced and managed space in the Land Registry's data centre in Gloucester. The data centre will house a portion of the OS's production infrastructure and support the launch of a new database management system.

The Land Registry said the centre includes a state-of-the-art venting system, which reduces overall energy consumption. It added that the amount of energy saved will be monitored as the project progresses.

A spokesperson for OS told GC News: "It is saving us time not having to build another data centre and it is a win-win for both departments really. I think it is the first data sharing centre of this type in government."

Ordnance Survey plans to start the migration of its infrastructure in early 2010 and will phase the operational switchover through the spring and summer.

"Looking to the future, it's also a potential platform for other operations to share services and cut costs," said John Wright, director of information systems at the Land Registry.
