Can public sector ICT expenditure withstand the recession?

Report overview

Those responsible for the delivery of ICT within the public sector will have to face some difficult choices as the effects of the recession, coupled with historically high levels of public sector debt begin to reverse the expansion of public sector expenditure we have witnessed over the last decade.

Kable's initial research into the effects of the recession on public sector ICT spend shows that:

• Respondents felt that any negative impact would in the majority be felt over the current and next financial year, before levelling off.
• The research indicates also that respondents are reverting to cost cutting measure as the main way to minimise the impact.
• The impact would not be the same for all sectors, nor would the impact be felt in a specific technology area.
• Many organisations are already adopting actions to counter recessionary pressures, though the majority of these appear to be tactically driven rather than strategic.
